Shape of Land draws from Cheonhado (천하도, 天下圖), circular world maps produced during the Joseon dynasty in which geographical knowledge, inherited understanding, and imagination coexist. I am interested in how these maps give form to both the known and the unknown, constructing a world that feels complete despite its geographical uncertainty. The paintings extend this idea through memory—another form of mapping in which certain details remain precise while others disappear, distort, or are reconstructed. Combining cartographic forms with recollections of landscapes and territories, Shape of Land considers how a place can remain convincing in the mind without remaining geographically true.
