Sung Jang’s practice begins with an interest in the ways nature and human intention encounter one another, and in the forms of perception and aesthetic sensibility that emerge between them. He is particularly drawn to attitudes toward nature found within traditional Korean aesthetics and to the practice of contemplation: an inclination to observe the forms and orders already present in nature rather than fully reshape them according to human will—to intervene only as much as necessary, and at times, to leave things as they are. Jang’s work considers the origins of this enduring sensibility and seeks to give it form through a contemporary visual language.

Born in Korea and having lived across Europe and the United States, Jang’s perspective has also been shaped by movement between different cultures and systems of value. Rather than belonging wholly to any one of them, he has come to regard each from a certain distance. The sense of absence that accompanies immigrant life—the distance from place and culture, and the interval between what is remembered and what is present—has in turn offered a way of seeing the familiar anew. Just as leaving one’s homeland can make it newly visible, distance can sometimes bring a subject into sharper view.

These concerns extend into works that consider the boundaries between nature and the made, material and image, physical reality and perception. Paintings originating in maps of the Joseon dynasty, objects incorporating natural stones, and installations formed through repetition and structure take distinctly different forms, yet share an underlying disposition. How do we perceive and receive nature? What do we make, and what do we choose to leave untouched? And where should the will of the maker come to rest?

Jang studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Domus Academy in Milan, and began his professional career at Samsung Design Milano. His practice has since developed across art, design, and education. He is currently a professor at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Design.

His work has been presented internationally at venues including the Venice Biennale, Design Miami, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Volume Gallery. His design work and collaborations have included projects with Louis Vuitton, Artemide, Samsung, McDonald’s, Roche Bobois among others.

Jang lives and works in Chicago.

(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)와 밀라노 도무스 아카데미에서 수학했으며, 삼성 디자인 밀라노에서 디자이너로 활동을 시작했다.

(Art Institute of Chicago), Armory Show, Volume Gallery
